Children bring joy into our lives and, in a strange and mysterious way, give us a truer perspective on what is genuinely important. In return, we prepare them to enter the adult world—we educate them. The question for every parent, teacher, and caring adult is: How do we prepare children for life while preserving their natural curiosity, wonder, and exhilaration for living?
One of the most ancient and enduring ways is through stories and songs. A meaningful story reaches beyond the child’s mind and touches the heart. A song can follow the same path, carrying feeling, imagination, and wisdom in a form the child can embrace.
Years later, the adult may not remember every word of the story or every verse of the song. Yet something remains: the feeling of listening while a mother, father, teacher, or other loving adult told the story or sang the song. What was given in love becomes part of the child—and may be remembered for a lifetime
We would now like to take the next step by inviting children to become active participants in theater, storytelling, music, and song. Instead of simply listening, they can step into a character, sing with others, move, imagine, create, and help bring a story to life.
Through these shared experiences, children learn to listen and respond to one another, cooperate, express their feelings, and discover the joy of creating something together. For a little while, the cell phone can remain in a pocket as the child becomes fully present—face-to-face with other children, engaged in a living world of music, imagination, and human connection. and song can provide something a screen cannot: the excitement of belonging, the courage to express oneself, and the unforgettable feeling of making music and telling stories together.
